Conventional Hot Water Heaters
Conventional storage water heaters represent old-fashioned technology that hasn't changed much in decades but are the most popular type of water heating system in Daphne, Fairhope, and Spanish Fort homes. A single-family storage water heater offers a ready reservoir -- from 20 to 80 gallons -- of hot water. It operates by releasing hot water from the top of the tank when you turn on the hot water tap. To replace that hot water, cold water enters the bottom of the tank, ensuring that the tank is always full. Conventional storage water heater fuel sources include natural gas, propane, fuel oil, and electricity.
A storage water heater normally has a 5 to 10-year manufacturer's warranty, which is about the life expectancy before water heater problems can start to develop. Even a water heater that's 15 years old can still provide plenty of hot water and appear to be in good operating condition - but looks can be deceiving - there may be problems inside that you can't see. The reality is that tank water heaters fail gradually, and then suddenly, one day you've got a flood on your hands that could cause thousands of dollars in damages. Consider replacing a water heater more than 10 years old. (The first four numbers of the serial number represent the month and year it was made.)
Corrosion and sediment inside your tank steadily diminish your tank's water heating efficiency and diminishing energy efficiency while also shortening the unit's lifespan. Sediment can be drained from a tank-type water heater during regular maintenance. The technician should also adjust settings and assess the heater's overall condition. All About Plumbing offers a variety of Maintenance Plans for homeowners in Daphne, Spanish Fort, and Fairhope. More Information can be found on our Plumbing Maintenance Agreement.
Tankless Hot Water Heaters
Tankless, also known as on demand or instantaneous water heaters, heat water directly without the use of a storage tank. When a hot water tap is turned on, cold water travels through a pipe into the unit. Either a gas burner or an electric element heats the water. As a result, tankless water heaters deliver a constant supply of hot water. You don't need to wait for a storage tank to fill up with enough hot water.
Typically, tankless, on demand water heaters provide hot water at a rate of 2–5 gallons per minute. They don't produce the standby energy losses associated with storage water heaters, which can save you money. In homes that use 41 gallons or less of hot water daily, demand water heaters can be 24%–34% more energy efficient than conventional storage tank water heaters. They can be 8%–14% more energy efficient for homes that use a lot of hot water -- around 86 gallons per day. ENERGY STAR® estimates that a typical family can save $100 or more per year with an ENERGY STAR qualified tankless water heater.
